Guest Lectures

These are classes that I have guest lectured at.  The attachments below also contain the presentations given at these classes.

High Speed System Measurements (E E 418), Iowa State University - Dr. Mani Mina
For this class I actually created a lab for demonstrating how transmissions lines work, the importance of impedance matching and using measured values from "cheap" equipment to compute the impedance and SWR using a smith chart.  The lab made use of amateur radio equipment for the demonstration including a MFJ-259B antenna analyzer, a Diamond SWR meter and a Yaesu FT-817 as a "real" transmission source.

Modeling and Techniques for Embedded Systems (Cpr E 584), Iowa State University - Dr. Phillip Jones
In this class I demonstrated techniques used in programming a Microchip PIC32 and optimizing the performance from the PIC32 using Microchip's C32 compilier.  In the class I used a simple blinking LED demonstration to show the improvements in each of the optimization methods used.  For the demonstration I used a PIC32 Starter Kit and the three LEDs on the starter kit.  MPLab was the IDE used and the Watch feature was used to show the improvements which were hard to tell from the blinking LEDs.  The attachment below is the code I used to demonstrate the improvements.

Tips and Techniques for PIC32

PIC32 with no optimization turned on - Demo

PIC32 with wait state optimization turned on

PIC32 with wait state and cache optimized

PIC32 with all optimizations turned on

Spacecraft Systems (AerE 464), Iowa State University - Dr. Bong Wie
In this class I did one week talking about power systems in spacecraft systems.  In a second week I then talked about Telemetry Tracking and Command (TT&C), a little on Command and Data Handling (C&DH) and covered communication systems including link budgets.  The lectures were designed to give the students an overall knowledge on those topics, but not an in-depth review.  In addition, I focused on giving some practical examples including using the Space Mission And Design (SMAD) book and the Firesat example used in there.
