What is amateur radio?

Amateur radio is an exciting hobby where you can communicate with others across town or across the globe. What is it exactly? To quote the ARRL:

Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need.

If you enjoy communications, electronics, helping others out, or being involved in an active community, amateur radio is for you.

How to get your license

Studying is the best method to prepare for the exam. There are several resources you can use, many of them for free. If you want a book to use, the ARRL has an excellent book.

The W0ISU group does held classes from time to time. If we hold a class, I will announce them here. ISU faculty, staff and students can also email Professor Matthew Nelson and get added to the Canvas page we have that has materials, videos and practice exams.

For online resources, hamstudy.org and hamexam.org are two excellent resources that have flash cards, practice exams and other resources. I strongly encourage everyone to take the practice exams. Shoot for getting a 90% or higher, if you are getting those type of scores, you should do fine on the real exam.

What to do after you get your license

Get involved and get on the air! Of course to get on the air, you will need a radio. Fortunatly, there are many options for different equipment.
